Though very natural, here are some tips to help you breastfeed your new baby. You should introduce your baby to breastfeeding as early as possible, to give them a chance to get used to action. The early introduction of artificial nipples such as pacifiers has been known to confuse young babies, so avoid these as long as possible. Breastfeed frequently as well to give your baby the vitamins and anti-bodies they need, and remember that your breast milk is the single best food for your baby, containing all they need to grow. To that end, maintain your nutrition and obtain from alcohol, drugs and smoking as these chemicals may end up in your milk. Consult your doctor before taking any medications. Positioning when breastfeeding is very important, and the nipple should go as far into the babies mouth as possible. Use your hand to support baby’s neck.

Keep an eye out for breast infections, as these require immediate treatment. Sore or cracked nipples can be alleviated by rubbing small amounts of milk around the nipple, though you can try vitamin E oil as well. Engorgement should be avoided, and use a breast pump if your breasts begin to hurt from producing too much milk. This problem generally goes away after a few weeks as your body learns how much milk to produce for your baby. All in all, remember to stay healthy yourself and that will ensure you give the highest quality milk to your baby and give you years of motherhood enjoyment.
